John Mackey Clarinet Concerto

John Mackey is undoubtedly a luminary in the Band world. I'd been familiar with John's work for years and I always thought how cool it would be to have a clarinet concerto written by him. Finally I plucked up the courage to send him an email and see if it might be something he'd be interested in. We met up in London at one of the best Indian restaurants around and we started talking about the idea. Over the next few months and after a couple of in-depth discussions at the bar during TMEA, it all started to take shape. I can't express just how excited I am that it is happening.

I am also really excited to be able to help contribute to the repertoire for the instrument. John's music has inspired so many people around the world, and that is the ultimate accolade. I can only hope that young clarinetists hear this concerto and it inspires them to work hard and strive for their goals. The premiere is going to be with none other than Jerry Junkin and the Dallas Winds in Autumn 22 with hopefully many performances to follow.
